Presented is a beautiful Japanese full oban-size original woodblock print created by Torii Kiyotada IV (四代目鳥居清忠) (1875 – 1941).
The print presented depict a samurai sharpening his V-shaped arrow head. This is Soga Gorô Tokimune (曾我五郎時致) from a Kabuki play "Yanone" (矢の根) (Arrow Head). Soga Goro Tokimune in "Yanone" one of the Ichikawa family's famous 18 kabuki plays.
"Yanone" is based on a 12th century vendetta story, in which the Soga brothers are trying to avenge the death of their father. Here, the younger brother Goro is sharpening a huge, V-shaped arrow head. He wishes the time is not far away to land this arrow to the neck of their archenemy.
Torii Kiyotada IV was a 20th century print artist and the seventh generation of Torii School printmakers. Born in Tokyo as Chokichi Saito, Kiyotada was adopted into the Torii family - a long line of printmakers with strong ties to Kabuki theater - by Kiyosada Torii. As a young man, Kiyotada briefly studied Tosa-style painting under Mitate Kawabe, but returned to the Torii style, theatrical scenes and actor portraits after a few years.
The print was made using the Japanese woodblock technique during Kunisada's lifetime. Signed with artist's signature "Kiyotada hitsu", and sealed with publisher's seals. The print is framed in a good quality modern wooden frame.

The condition is very good. Excellent detail and colors with some minor toning of paper. The silver colors are printed (or hand-painted) with metallic die. The frame is in excellent condition.Images sell!
