VTG Louise Goodman Navajo Pottery Bear Figure Signed Folk Art Pine Pitch CHIPS
7 1/2 inches tall x 5 inches wide x 4 1/2 inches long
Authentic Navajo folk art clay sculpture of a standing bear, handcrafted by the celebrated Dine potter Louise Goodman (1937-2015). The bear exhibits Goodman\'s whimsical style, featuring a heavy torso, short legs, a small head, and an upright posture with outstretched arms. The fur is simulated with deep, incised vertical lines, finished with a pinon pine pitch glaze applied hot after outdoor pit firing. Bear is signed LRG on base. Goodman initially made traditional utilitarian pottery but by the 1980s there was a decline in demand for functional vessels and she pivoted to decorative animal effigies and rope pots. Her expressive bears symbolize power, healing, and plentitude.
Bear is chipped on both feet and on the right side near base.Bear is made in a rustic nature.
