Vintage German lidded beer stein featuring a beautifully detailed, colorful raised-relief scene with a castle town backdrop and traditional figures. Crafted from heavy ceramic/stoneware, with a detailed metal pewter lid that opens easily. The German phrase on the Stein reads. “Ja So Waren die Alten Rittersleut” translated this means: “ yes, that’s how they were, the Knights of old used to be”
This is a famous line from a traditional German folk song, originally written in the 19th century. The song humorously looks back on the rugged, beer,-drinking, and adventurous lifestyle of the medieval nights living in their castles. Because it is a beloved, lighthearted tavern singing song, it is one of the most classic and popular inscriptions I found on vintage German beer stains.
Perfect for collectors of Breweriana vintage bar ware, or European decor.
