AMHERST COLLEGESince its founding in 1821, Amherst College has become what many regardas the premier liberal arts college in the nation, enrolling some 1,600talented, energetic and diverse young men and women. Amherst Collegewas founded in 1821 by Congregational clergy and Amherst citizensincluding lexicographer Noah Webster and Samuel Fowler Dickinson (EmilyDickinson\'s grandfather). This group sought to create a non-sectarianinstitution that would educate young men - especially poor but talentedstudents - for the ministry and other vocations. Amherst today is anindependent liberal arts college for young men and women.
