This listing is for a rough, pre-cut, unpolished Oregon Coast agate packed with a variety of mineral inclusions & a unique texture. Most of the outer layer is translucent carnelian agate but the center remains opaque. This piece is heavy & very dense relative to its size. I’ve never found another piece quite like this one. Dark chalcedony, sard agate, jasper appear visible through the cut w/ pockets of druzy crystals on the exterior. Although I cut this piece in half, this piece is NOT polished. Ideal specimen for lapidary work.

Agates are unique because it is a mineral that’s never been able to be replicated in a laboratory. Agates develop over millions of years in metamorphic, igneous & volcanic rocks with a precise combination of time, water and various compositions of mineral deposits due to Oregon’s rich & violent volcanic history. Agates are mainly composed of varying amounts of chalcedony, silica & quartz. The many different colors that agates can have are attributed to small amounts of additional trace minerals & impurities that made their way into the agate cavity (by seeping groundwater) during its formation; ie: copper, iron oxides, sulfur, moganite, etc.
The average age of Oregon agates ranges between 13 & 25 million years.
The ornamental use of agates goes back to Ancient Greece, and was worn by Greek warriors and the use of polished agates date back to the 3rd millennium BCE in the Indus Valley. The name it has today was given by Theophrastus, a Greek philosopher and naturalist, who discovered the stone along the shores of the Drillo River in Sicily.
