The Williamsburg Soap and Candle Company first opened in 1965. The business was founded by John Barnett, Sr., who moved an old barn from a nearby farm to serve as the initial building for the complex.The store was originally known as the Village Barn and changed its name to the Williamsburg Soap and Candle Company around 1966 when John Barnett Jr. (\"Jack\") began manufacturing candles and soap to sell in the shop. It grew to become a major local icon and popular tourist attraction in the Norge section of James City County, Virginia, operating until its closure in 2005.
