Overview
This is a genuine Umayyad-period lead seal bearing the Arabic inscription لأمير (Li-Amīr), meaning “Belonging to the Commander.” The inscription is executed in early undotted Kufic script typical of late 7th-century Islamic administrative seals.
Such lead bullae were used to secure documents, tax records, or trade goods under state authority. The term “Amīr” referred to a provincial commander or official appointed under Umayyad governance. During the reign of ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Marwān (685–705 AD), Arabic became the official administrative language of the empire, and seals such as this were widely used across the Levant and surrounding territories.
These early Islamic seals represent tangible evidence of the formative administrative structure of the Umayyad state.
