This vibrant triptych depicts a climax from Sukeroku, one of the most famous plays in the Kabuki repertoire (part of the celebrated Kabuki Jūhachiban or "Eighteen Great Plays"). Set in Yoshiwara, Edo’s red-light district, the hero Sukeroku—played here by the legendary actor Ichikawa Danjūrō IX (center bottom)—searches for a sacred stolen sword by deliberately provoking samurai into drawing their weapons.

The composition features key characters framed against the iconic red wooden lattice (magaki) of Yoshiwara. At the top center stands Sukeroku’s rival, the wealthy old villain Ikyū (Nakamura Shikan), with his distinctive white hair and beard. Surrounding them are the glamorous courtesans Agemaki and Shirotama, along with Sukeroku's brother Shinbei disguised as a sake seller (Ichikawa Sadanji, top right). Kunichika masterfully captures the dramatic tension and theatrical luxury of Meiji-era Kabuki.
