Beautifully detailed, historic, largeB-29 Superfortresspatch. Four inches across.
This patch is an exact copy of an extremely rare B-29 "qualification" patch issued to B-29 aircrew members during and after WWII. An original patch would cost approximately $200 depending on condition.
Besides being rare, the patch is unique in that it was the first patch designed for an individual aircraft versus being a squadron, group or numbered Air Force patch. Individual aircraft patches really didn't come into being until the Vietnam War era and are mostly fighter aircraft patches at that.
You can definitely see the WWII "style" in the patch and there's significant symbology in the patch to include the prominent display of the "globe" highlighting the strategic, long range of the B-29 and the "V" for victory which is enmeshed in the large wings featured on the patch.
TheBoeing B-29 Superfortressis a four-enginepropeller-drivenheavy bomberdesigned byBoeingwhich was flown primarily by theUnited StatesduringWorld War IIand theKorean War. It was one of the largest aircraft operational during World War II and featuredstate of the arttechnology. It was the single most expensive weapons project undertaken by the United States in World War II, exceeding the cost of theManhattan Projectby between 1 and 1.7 billion dollars.Innovations included apressurized cabin, dual-wheeled, tricycle landing gear, and a remote,computer-controlledfire-control systemthat directed four machine gun turrets that could be operated by a single gunner and a fire-control officer. A manned tail gun installation was semi-remote. The name "Superfortress" continued the pattern Boeing started with its well-known predecessor, theB-17 Flying Fortress. Designed for the high-altitudestrategic bomberrole, the B-29 also excelled in low-altitude nighttimeincendiary bombingmissions. One of the B-29's final roles during World War II was carrying out theatomic bomb attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
