📌 DESCRIPTION

Three decades of naval service. Nine Navy ships and commands. A lifetime of engineering and leadership.

This substantial U.S. Navy Master Chief Machinist’s Mate challenge coin brings together an extraordinary collection of naval insignias, historic warships, and engineering traditions in one intricately detailed commemorative design.

The coin’s appeal extends beyond a traditional retirement commemoration. Its nine individual ship and command crests, dimensional propeller centerpiece, and industrial diamond-plate artwork create a visual tribute to the Navy’s engineering community and the vessels and organizations that support fleet operations.

Created to commemorate the 30-year naval career of MMCM(SW/AW) Jose Camacho, the coin documents service spanning June 10, 1996, through July 1, 2026. The MMCM designation identifies a Master Chief Machinist’s Mate, the Navy’s highest enlisted paygrade within that rating, while SW/AW denotes Surface Warfare and Aviation Warfare qualifications.

⚓ THE PROPELLER SIDE — NAVAL ENGINEERING HERITAGE

A large, three-dimensional, three-blade ship’s propeller forms the centerpiece of the design, set against the red, white, and blue Texas state flag.

The propeller incorporates a mechanical spinner assembly, adding movement and depth to the custom-shaped coin. Personalized initials—GGS, GNC, and JR—appear on the individual blades.

Raised lettering identifies the honoree and his naval rating, while the dates 10 JUNE 1996 and 01 JULY 2026 mark the beginning and conclusion of the commemorated 30-year career.

Detailed steam clouds, engineering gauges, and a coffee mug complete the artwork, combining shipboard engineering imagery with familiar Navy Chief traditions.

Prominently displayed is the unmistakable motto:

NO STEAM, NO FIGHT

Long associated with Navy Machinist’s Mates and Boiler Technicians, this expression reflects the essential role of engineering personnel in maintaining propulsion, shipboard machinery, and operational readiness.

It is a fitting centerpiece for a coin celebrating three decades in the Navy’s engineering community.

⚓ THE REVERSE — NINE NAVY SHIPS & COMMANDS

The reverse offers one of the coin’s strongest connections to naval history.

A raised U.S. Navy Master Chief Petty Officer anchor occupies the center, surrounded by nine individually detailed, multicolored ship and command insignias.

The background incorporates a sculpted industrial diamond-plate pattern, reinforcing the coin’s mechanical and engineering identity.

The surrounding insignias represent five U.S. Navy vessels and four shore-based organizations:

⚓ USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76) — Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, representing one of the Navy’s principal platforms for carrier-based aviation and global power projection.

⚓ USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) — Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier with an extensive operational history supporting U.S. naval missions worldwide.

⚓ USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD-6) — Wasp-class amphibious assault ship that served the Navy until its loss following a devastating shipboard fire in July 2020. Its inclusion provides a connection to a historically significant vessel no longer in service.

⚓ USS Inchon (LPH-12 / MCS-12) — Originally an amphibious assault ship, later converted into a mine countermeasures command ship. Its service history reflects a distinctive transition between naval warfare missions.

⚓ USS Mount Hood (AE-29) — Kilauea-class ammunition ship that supported fleet logistics and underway replenishment operations before its decommissioning in 1999.

⚓ Southwest Regional Maintenance Center (SWRMC) — San Diego-based naval organization supporting ship maintenance, repair, engineering, and fleet material readiness.

⚓ Engineering Assessments Pacific (EAP) — Naval engineering assessment organization supporting fleet engineering standards, evaluations, and operational readiness.

⚓ Navy Recruiting District San Antonio — Represents the Navy’s recruiting mission and the development of future generations of sailors.

⚓ Afloat Training Group San Diego — Supports shipboard training, crew proficiency, and operational readiness throughout the surface fleet.

Together, these nine insignias document a diverse naval career encompassing aircraft carriers, amphibious warfare, fleet logistics, shipboard engineering, maintenance, recruiting, and operational training.

For collectors, the inclusion of recognizable vessels such as USS Bonhomme Richard, USS Inchon, and USS Mount Hood adds historical interest, particularly given their connection to earlier periods of U.S. Navy service.

Beyond its commemorative purpose, the coin offers several distinct areas of collecting interest: Navy Master Chief insignia, Machinist’s Mate traditions, historic warships, aircraft carriers, and specialized naval engineering memorabilia.

Its unusual construction, dimensional artwork, and combination of nine ship and command insignias make it a compelling addition to a focused U.S. Navy challenge coin collection.
