Early real photo postcard showing theU.S. Army Transport Loganalongside a pier, her name clearly visible on the bow and the vessel dressed with strings of signal flags. The view gives an excellent broadside study of the large Army transport, including her single funnel, lifeboats, masts, deck equipment, open promenade areas, and small harbor craft lying alongside.
TheUSAT Loganwas one of the important early vessels of the U.S. Army Transport Service. Built by Harland & Wolff in Belfast and launched in 1892 as the British steamshipManitoba, she was purchased by the U.S. Government in 1898 and renamedLoganin 1899 in honor of Major General John A. Logan. Operating from the Pacific Coast, Logan carried troops, passengers, supplies, and military cargo on trans-Pacific service associated with Hawaii, Guam, the Philippines, China, and other Pacific destinations. This postcard was mailed during that active pre-World War I period.
The card is postmarkedHonolulu, Hawaii, September 5, 1910, 9 A.M.and bears a particularly attractiveHonolulu machine flag cancel, with the waving U.S. flag and star field striking across the franking. This is a scarce and highly collectible early Honolulu flag cancellation. A 1-cent green Washington-Franklin series stamp pays the domestic postcard rate to Burlington, Kansas.
The sender dates the message “Honolulu Sept 5,” describes Hawaii as “a fine trip,” notes that they will stay there one day, and signs the card “Kate.” The combination of a strong Army transport image, dated Honolulu usage, and scarce flag machine cancellation gives the piece crossover interest for collectors of Hawaiian postal history, U.S. military transportation, maritime history, Army Transport Service material, and early Pacific travel.
