The L-1049, often called the "Super Connie," was a stretched and more powerful version of the earlier Lockheed Constellation models, designed to compete with the Douglas DC-6. It featured a fuselage lengthened by 18 feet, larger fuel capacity, pressurized cabin, and improved passenger accommodations, allowing seating for 76–106 passengers depending on configuration. The aircraft had a distinctive triple-tail design and was powered by four Wright R-3350 turbo-compound radial engines, each producing up to 3,250 horsepower. Development began in 1943, with the first prototype flying on October 13, 1950. The production L-1049 first flew on July 14, 1951, and entered service with Eastern Air Lines in December 1951
Trans World Airlines (TWA) was a major airline in the United States and was founded on 16 July 1930, as Transcontinental and Western Air. The famed aviator Howard Hughes acquired control of TWA in 1939. The airline ceased operations on 01 December 2001, when it was merged with American Airlines.
This L-1049 Constellation with registration N7104C was first delivered to TWA on 16 March 1955. It provided service with TWA until September of 1965, when it was sold to aircraft parts dealer Aaron Ferer & Sons, where it was parted out and ultimately scrapped (how very sad).
