Most importantly, it had massive bony flanges (chin sheaths) dropping down from its lower jaw to act as protective scabbards for the teeth when its mouth was closed. Thylacosmilus is a sparassodont—part of the sister group to true marsupials. It had a pouched young and a completely different reproductive system than the Smilodon it resembled.
