The Trainer Built to Scare You: AT-9 Jeep Night Flight Line, 6x9: $125.00
The Trainer Built to Scare You: AT-9 Jeep Night Flight Line, 6x9 Original 6x9 press photograph of Curtiss AT-9 \"Jeep\" advanced trainers on a floodlit night flight line, USAAF Southeast Training CenterDESCRIPTIONThis is an original vintage press photograph, measuring approximately 6 x 9 inches, showing a row of Curtiss AT-9 \"Jeep\" advanced twin-engine trainers parked on a floodlit flight line at night during World War II.The aircraft carry training identification numbers M557, M561, and M550 among others visible down the ramp, their distinctive twin tail fins catching the light against a dark sky streaked by long exposure light trails. In the foreground, two ground crew wing-walkers guide a larger single-tail, twin-engine cabin aircraft, most consistent with a Cessna AT-17 Bobcat, into its parking spot. The AT-9 was deliberately built to be a demanding, twitchy airplane so that cadets moving up from single-engine trainers would already be comfortable with a difficult twin before reaching a combat squadron such as a P-38 Lightning unit.Curtiss built 791 of them between 1941 and 1943, and only one or two complete examples are known to survive today, most were ordered scrapped after the war rather than released as civilian surplus. The reverse of the photograph carries a period ink credit stamp reading \"Please Credit to Army Air Forces, Southeast Training Center,\" confirming this as an official military public affairs release rather than a private snapshot or later wire copy. The Southeast Training Center, headquartered at Maxwell Field, Alabama, oversaw advanced twin-engine pilot training at bases across the eastern United States during the war, though the specific airfield pictured is not identified on the photograph itself. The photograph has been archivally scanned at 600dpi to preserve full detail for research and reproduction.Every effort is made toward fact-checking and provenance research, including background research through news and historical archives. If any listing is incorrect in any way and you\'re unsatisfied with the item, please connect with me and I\'ll make it right. Orders placed before noon CDT ship same day via USPS Ground Advantage with tracking, so you know exactly when it will arrive. Shipping is free and already built into the price, so the BIN price is exactly what you pay, no surprise shipping costs at checkout. Returns accepted on all items exceeding $25 in cost. Rigid, professional packaging on all shipments, sealed and protected in acid free protectors.CONDITIONThe photograph is in generally good condition for its age, with a sharp, well-exposed image despite the challenges of night flash photography. There are several fine surface crease lines running through the image area and a couple of short edge cracks near the top border, along with light corner curl. The reverse shows yellowed toning and water staining typical of archival storage, along with the period credit stamp, a circled agency initial, and pencil archive notations. The image itself remains clear, with all visible aircraft markings and tail numbers legible.
