ThePrisoner is a 17-episode British television series. Starring andco-created by Patrick McGoohan, it combined spy fiction with elementsof science fiction, allegory, and psychological drama. The seriesfollows a British former secret agent who is abducted and heldprisoner in an isolated coastal village resort where his captors tryto find out why he abruptly resigned from his job. In The Village,everyone has a number instead of a name, and wears a button withtheir number.

NineteenEighty-Four, often published as 1984, is a dystopian novel publishedin 1949 by English author George Orwell. The novel is set in AirstripOne (formerly known as Great Britain), a province of the superstateOceania in a world of perpetual war, omnipresent governmentsurveillance, and public manipulation. The superstate and itsresidents are ruled by a political regime euphemistically namedEnglish Socialism, shortened to "Ingsoc" in Newspeak, thegovernment's invented language. The superstate is under the controlof the privileged elite of the Inner Party, a party and governmentthat persecutes individualism and independent thinking as"thoughtcrime", which is enforced by the "ThoughtPolice".
