ThePrisoner is a 17-episode British television series first broadcast inthe United Kingdom from 29 September 1967 to 1 February 1968.Starring and co-created by Patrick McGoohan, it combined spy fictionwith elements of science fiction, allegory, and psychological drama.

Theseries follows a British former secret agent who is abducted and heldprisoner in a mysterious coastal village resort where his captors tryto find out why he abruptly resigned from his job. In the villageeveryone has numbers, not names, and the leader is called Number Two.

Inthe opening credits of the show, McGoohan\'s character is assigned thenumber 6, to which he declares, \"I am not a number, I am a freeman!\"

Althoughsold as a thriller in the mould of the previous series starringMcGoohan, Danger Man (1960) [retitled as \"Secret Agent\" inthe US], the show\'s combination of 1960s countercultural themes andsurreal setting had a far-reaching effect on science fiction/fantasyprogramming, and on popular culture in general.
