Hard-to-find vintage The Liquid advertising STARR "X" wall mount bottle opener associated with the historic Liquid Carbonic Company. The opener carries the PATD APR 1925 marking and is a well-used example with substantial age and service wear. What it gives up in condition, it more than makes up for in history: Liquid Carbonic was one of the companies that helped transform American soda fountains and commercial soft-drink bottling.
History
The story of The Liquid begins with pharmacist and inventor Jacob Baur. In 1888, Baur and a group of investors organized the Liquid Carbonic Acid Manufacturing Company in Chicago around a deceptively important idea: supplying carbon dioxide under pressure so druggists and bottlers could make carbonated water where they actually used it.
Before systems like Baur's became practical, soda-fountain operators often purchased already-carbonated water and had it delivered to their businesses. Liquid Carbonic instead supplied gas cylinders and equipment that allowed an operator to carbonate water on site. It reduced the handling, expense, and inconvenience of moving large quantities of finished soda water and helped make carbonation a practical part of everyday drugstore and bottling operations.
The idea took off quickly. By the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Liquid Carbonic was supplying carbon dioxide for concessions at the fair and using the enormous event as a showcase for the rapidly growing soda-fountain trade. The company expanded from carbonic gas into the machinery around it, eventually supplying soda fountains, carbonators, cooling equipment, fillers, bottle washers, rinsers, syrup systems, and other equipment used throughout the beverage industry.
To understand the world in which Liquid Carbonic equipment operated, picture the classic American pharmacy soda fountain. Drugstores were not simply places to fill prescriptions. The fountain counter became a neighborhood gathering place where customers could sit down for a carbonated drink, ice cream, or a quick bite while the pharmacy business continued around them.

Liquid Carbonic became increasingly close to a one-stop equipment supplier for the beverage trade. A surviving 1915 bottling-company purchase record, for example, lists a Liquid Carbonic carbonator along with conveyors, a rinser, liquid-gas apparatus, cooling tank, filler, storage tank, and other supplies. The company was helping bottlers handle much of the path from carbonation to the finished bottle.
It also adapted as bottled soft drinks became more important. One particularly clever Liquid Carbonic cooler was advertised around a simple sales pitch: put a warm bottle into the system and a cold bottle came out ready to serve. Bottles were routed through chilled tubes surrounding an ice-filled chest, allowing several different drinks to be cooled while using less floor space and ice than conventional storage.

Liquid Carbonic was also experimenting with refrigeration itself. The company was among the important manufacturers of so-called iceless soda fountains, and by 1909 it was offering its Liquid-Diamond Carbonator, a compact unit designed to combine the processes needed to produce carbonated water on site. That progression from selling carbon dioxide to supplying the machinery, refrigeration, fountains, and bottling equipment around it helps explain just how influential the company became.
And that history connects directly to this opener. Brown Manufacturing's own STARR historical timeline records that on March 14, 1928, a letter to bottlers announced that the Liquid Carbonic Company had adopted STARR "X" openers for installation on its machines. That documented relationship makes The Liquid opener especially interesting: it was not simply a promotional logo placed on an unrelated object. STARR openers were actually being incorporated into Liquid Carbonic beverage equipment.
Brown MFG Co. was founded in Newport News, Virginia in 1925 by Raymond "Coca-Cola" Brown, a Coca-Cola bottler. More than a century later, Brown remains in business and STARR bottle openers are still part of its product line.

This example combines the embossed The Liquid advertising with the familiar STARR "X" form and PATD APR 1925 marking. The advertiser is what makes the piece particularly compelling: Liquid Carbonic was directly involved in the development and supply of the equipment used to carbonate, cool, fill, and serve early soft drinks, and Brown's records document its adoption of STARR "X" openers in 1928.
