This Is aBeautiful tooth tip from either a juvenile TYRANNOSAURUS REX or a NANOTYRANNUS fromthe Hell Creek Formation in Carter County, Montana, USA! It measures .51 inches (1.3 cm) with great serrations and no repair or restoration! It comes in a 1 inch gem jar for easy transport and display!
The HellCreek Formation is home to two species of Tyrannosaur Dinosaur, T-Rex andNanotyrannus
Even ifyou\'re not a paleontologist, or even a scientist, you\'ve almost certainly heardof T-rex. The monster sized carnivore ruled Late Cretaceous North America witha stubby, two fingered iron fist! Growing to over 40 feet (12 meters) in lengthand over 15 TONS of muscle teeth and claws!! Unlike other carnivorousdinosaurs, T-rex was extraordinarily bulky and muscular. Although there weresome carnivorous dinosaurs who exceeded T-rex in length, comparing them toT-Rex is like comparing a NBA player to a bodybuilder on steroids! This wasreflected in its teeth which are much thicker than other carnivorous dinosaurteeth to withstand it\'s gargantuan bite force, bearing more of a resemblance toserrated spikes than serrated knives. The juveniles were more svelte than theadults, built more for speed than power. It has even been suggested that theywould engage in cooperative hunting, the youngsters would use their speed topush potential prey towards the massive jaws of the adults. Like otherdinosaurs, T-rex went through multiple sets of teeth in its life time, spittingout an old tooth when a new one was ready to take its place.
Nanotyrannusis a truly fascinating story both evolutionarily and historically. Foundalongside its much larger cousin, the infamous T-rex, paleontologist have longdebated whether Nanotyrannus is a distinct species or just juvenile T-rexes.This fierce debate continues today, with many paleontologist subscribing toeither side. If Nanotyrannus is a valid species, it represents a strange turnin Tyrannosaur evolution. During the last 15 million years of the Cretaceousperiod, the Tyrannosaurs of North America were getting progressively larger, aprocess which culminated in T-rex. Nanotyrannus however lived, alongside T-rexand yet was much smaller (about 16 feet long) than the proceeding Tyrannosaurswhich it itself evolved from!
Honesty andproper identification is very important to me. Although this specimen iswithout a doubt from either T-rex or Nanotyrannus I am not comfortable enoughto place it in one or the other. What I am sure of is it\'s relation to the mosticonic of carnivorous dinosaurs and that it would make a fantastic addition toany fossil collection!
