Under the management of Joseph R Anderson, Tredegar Iron Works in Richmond, Virginia became an important artillery and ordnance producer before the Civil War. An Original letter from US Navy Commander John S Chauncey at Washington, May 28, 1848 to Commander Lewis Warrington, Chief of the Bureau of Ordnance, reporting he has completed the inspection of 25 thirty two pounder cannon at Tredegar Foundry, cast by JR Anderson Esq, and reports the cannon are made with precision and satisfactory in all respects. Captain Chauncey had a long and distinguished service including command of the USS Susquehanna, capturing blockade runners off Cape Hatteras. Joseph R Anderson continued producing artillery during the Civil War making Tredegar Works the South's source of over 1100 cannons and related ordnance.items, including the iron plates used in the building of the CSS Ironclad Virginia.. 1p 8 x 12" manuscript ink, on lined gray paper.
