Swiss Pewter Wine Measure, Canton Valais (Wallis), probably Sion (Sitten), c. 1800–1830.
Small baluster-form cast pewter wine measure with bulbous body, flared molded foot, incised bands, heart-shaped pointed hinged cover, strap handle and double-acorn thumbpiece.
The lid bears the struck arms of the Canton of Valais together with worn maker's and quality/control marks. The maker is possiblyAlvazzi & Castel of Sion, active together from about 1810, although the worn master's touch prevents a definitive attribution from the presently visible marks.
Height 7 in.; base 3 in.; overall depth 4½ in.; weight 1 lb. 6 oz.; capacity approximately 300 ml.
