About this medal:Catherine Pine (1864-1941) was a nurse who worked closely with the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) and was particularly close to Emmeline Pankhurst. She nursed Emmeline through poor health caused by hunger strikes. Her medal was sacred to her, and in her will, she bequeathed it to an archive. While it was delivered, it went missing for many decades, found in the U.S., and returned to the U.K. where it went on display for the first time at the Florence Nightingale Museum (exhibit ending on 10/4/2026).
This medal is very similar to the ‘Hunger Strike Medal’ or ‘Medal of Valour’ that was awarded to those who members of the WSPU who went on hunger strike. However, Pine’s medal differs because she did not personally go on hunger strike. The medal was awarded to Catherine Pine for duty and each of the 11 bars has a date which refers to a time that Emmeline Pankhurst or her daughter Sylvia was nursed by Catherine Pine.
These replica medals have been produced by The Cora di Brazzà Foundation as part of "Nurse Pine Medal" project.
