Here is a large, stunningly beautiful piece of ammolite, polished on one side. It is from an ancient ammonite, from the Cretaceous, about 70 million years ago. The species of ammonite was Placenticeras.
This gorgeous solid piece contains, some of the most vibrant, shocking purple we have ever seen. Simply magnificent. Examine the photos for yourself. Purple is often acknowledged as the most sought-after ammolite color, and this one is full of purple. Some beautiful striations as well, called ripples.
This specimen is about 51 mm. (2.01 inches) at the greatest length, and weighs 35 grams. It is from the famous Bearpaw Formation, Alberta, Canada.
The piece is shown in bright light. Like all ammolite, it needs bright light to make its colors come "alive". Looking at ammolite on a nice sunny day in direct sunlight works very well.
There are 5 different materials made of organic substances that are officially recognized as gem material. These are amber, coral, jet, pearl, and most recently, ammolite has been added to the list.
Less of this is being found all the time.
