A wonderful matched pair of authentic vintage Skookum "Bully Good" Indian dolls — one female and one male — in the desirable larger 11" size, with the original oval sun label intact on the female's foot — one of the most important provenance details a Skookum collector can find.
Label Dating:
The oval printed paper label reading "TRADEMARK REGISTERED / SKOOKUM (BULLY GOOD) INDIAN / PATENTED / U.S.A." with sun symbol dates these dolls to the 1930s into early 1940s production period — confirmed simultaneously by the suede/leather-covered wooden feet, which are characteristic of 1920s–1930s construction, the most desirable era of Skookum production.
About Skookum Dolls:
Skookum Indian dolls were created by Mary McAboy of Missoula, Montana beginning in 1913, patented and trademarked by 1919, and produced commercially through the 1960s. "Skookum" (Bully Good) comes from Chinook trade language. These highly collectible American character dolls depicted Native Americans of various tribes and were sold at tourist destinations and souvenir shops across the United States.
