Antique Simonds Manufacturing Company No. 255 Butcher Hand Saw. Made in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, USA. Approx. 23 inches long overall. All Original--Good Condition.
In 1832, Abel Simonds of Fitchburg, Massachusetts, started his own company with his brother-in-law John Thurston Farwell manufacturing scythes and woodworking knives. Sometime in the 1850’s, Abel Simonds bought out Farwell and began manufacturing under the name of A. Simonds & Company. Over the years, all of Abel’s sons supported the business in some capacity contributing to its renowned reputation. By the early 1900’s, Simonds Manufacturing Co. was a firmly established player in the saw market. Simonds had one of the first all-electrically operated plants in the United States as well as the first windowless factory. During WWII, the company made armor plate for the Allies. A large amount of the armor plate was used in the nose sections of the allied fighter and bomber airplanes. In addition, cross-cut saws were regulation equipment on all tanks, bombers and assault craft. Today, the company operates as Simonds International.
