A beautifully painted small Mata Ortiz pottery vase, signed "Isidro Ortiz" on the base. Purchased from West Southwest, a specialty Native American and folk art gallery in the Cherry Creek neighborhood of Denver, Colorado.
Isidro Ortiz is a recognized potter within the Mata Ortiz tradition of Chihuahua, Mexico, known especially for his blackware and for versatile, highly detailed polychrome work using traditional Paquimé and Mimbres-inspired geometric symbols. He is profiled in Susan Lowell's book "The Many Faces of Mata Ortiz." Like all authentic Mata Ortiz pottery, this piece is entirely hand-coiled without a potter's wheel, hand-painted with fine brushes, and burnished before firing — no glaze is used.
The surface design is exceptionally dense and precise, including a fine cross-hatched checkerboard panel and layered geometric motifs in red, black, cream, blue, and green, with the artist's signature worked directly into the base design.
