Signed Thompson Shalako Kachina Carving 15” Nicholas Mitropoulos Estate
Striking signed Shalako katsina/kachina-style wood carving acquired directly from the estate of collector Nicholas Mitropoulos of Edgecomb, Maine.
This is one of several ethnographic and tribal-art pieces obtained from the Mitropoulos estate, a collection that included a wide variety of unusual and higher-quality carvings and cultural objects.
The figure stands approximately 16 inches tall including the base and is beautifully executed, with bold traditional colors, an elaborate headdress, projecting horns, carved feather elements, and extensive hand-painted geometric decoration.
The underside is hand-inscribed:
The signature appears consistent with works attributed in the marketplace to Jason Thompson, although I have not independently authenticated the artist, so I am selling it simply as a signed Thompson carving rather than guaranteeing a specific maker or tribal affiliation.
Shalako figures are associated with the ceremonial traditions of the American Southwest, particularly Zuni culture. This example has wonderful presence and considerably more character than mass-produced decorative pieces.
Good preowned condition (see photos).
