A charming small West African stool, hand-carved in the Senufo style with a rich dark patina.
This four-legged stool is hand-carved in the tradition of the Senufo people of Côte d'Ivoire and Mali. It appears to be carved from a single block of wood, with the legs flowing directly from the underside of the seat. The round, gently dished seat sits on four thick, slightly splayed legs. Tool marks and the natural irregularities of hand carving are visible throughout, the hallmarks of work done by eye rather than by machine.
The surface has a deep, dark brown patina, and the seat shows the swirling growth rings of the wood. Its small scale makes it versatile: a plant stand, a bedside perch, a display pedestal for other art, or a low seat.
Dimensions:
- Height: 11.5 in
- Seat diameter: 10 in
Condition:The stool is stable and does not rock, but the seat sits at a slight tilt because the hand-carved legs vary in length, as is common with pieces of this kind. Please see all photos.
