Up for sale is a vintage museum entomology cabinet containing 23 Schmitt boxes, age unknown (1950's - 1960's, perhaps even earlier). The cabinet plus boxes is very heavy (160 pounds), with a front door that locks with a key. The cabinet has slots for each Schmitt box.
All Schmitt boxes are very well-constructed (dovetail joints on corners, bottoms look to be veneered panels set into the frames) out of various beautiful hardwoods, snug close-fitting tops with hinges on the back and hook latches on the sides, some of the best-constructed Schmitt boxes I have seen. Puts the modern cardboard ones to shame! Paper has been glued to the inside top lids, with a variety of pinning bottoms or unit trays (see pictures) present. One box does have a split/crack on the top lid (see last picture).
Signs of wear on the cabinet (scratches, scuffs, nicks, old paint, etc.), typical of museum use and moving, and the boxes (label remnants, scratches, nicks, scraping wear. etc.), but overall a very impressive vintage entomology cabinet!
Cabinet dimensions: Top is 25 x almost 16 inches, bottom is 25 1/2 x a little over 16 inches. Height: almost 47 3/4 inches tall (almost four feet).
Each drawer is approximately 13 x 9 1/4 x 2 3/4 inches, outer dimensions.
THIS IS VERY HEAVY,so local pickup preferred, Orlando FL area. If you want to utilize a moving company, let them know the cabinet dimensions and weight, and then work with me on a pickup time.
IMPORTANT: Strong mothball smell in the boxes and cabinet, even though it has been aired out frequently.
