This is an original Sargent VBM No. 3411 transitional smoothing plane, made in the early 1900s. The “VBM” mark—Very Best Made—was Sargent’s premium line, produced roughly from 1900 to 1918. These transitional planes combined a cast-iron frog and hardware with a solid beech wood sole, giving woodworkers the feel of a traditional wooden plane with the adjustability of an iron one.
This example shows its age well, with the original wooden tote and front knob, the cast iron frog assembly, and the Sargent-marked cutter still present. The wood body has wear, age cracks, and finish loss consistent with a 100+ year-old user tool. It displays great antique character and is ideal for collectors, restoration projects, or vintage workshop décor.
