You are offerding on one lot of three Sargent Number 407 wood planes as pictured. There are some condition issues, so please keep reading down to the discussion about condition.
To be clear, none of the planes are Number 7 Shaw's Patent planes, but 2 of the lever caps are marked "7" and are the style used on Shaw's Patent planes. Those two lever caps have springs that are rounded on the upper ends.
Included are, from left to right in the first picture, and they stay in the same order:
--- a Number 407 plane that is not marked anywhere on the body, but is marked "407" on the underside of the frog, "SARGENT VBM No 407 NEW HAVEN CT USA" on the iron, "SARGENT VBM" on the front side of the lever cap, and "7" on the back side of the lever cap. The iron is about 1-5/8" in width, and is about 6-11/16" in overall length. The front knob is the short style and is beaded.
--- a Number 407 plane that is marked "407" on the body behind the frog, "407" on the underside of the frog, "SARGENT VBM No 407 NEW HAVEN CT USA" on the iron, "SARGENT VBM" on the front side of the lever cap, and "7" on the back side of the lever cap. The iron is a hair under 1-5/8" in width, and is about 6-11/16" in overall length. The front knob is the taller style.
--- and a Number 407 plane that is marked "407" on the body behind the frog, "407" on the underside of the frog, "SARGENT No 407 NEW HAVEN CT USA" on the iron, "SARGENT" on the front side of the lever cap, and "407" on the back side of the lever cap. The iron is a hair under 1-5/8" in width, and about 6-3/4" in overall length. The front knob is the taller stye but rather narrow. There are three dots center punched on the back side of the iron near the upper edge.
The irons on the two VBM planes are between .105" and .110" in thickness.
The throat might have been opened up on the plane on the right, as the front and read edges of the opening are not quite parallel to each other. The lever cap on the plane on the left is chipped on the lower edge.
Condition of all three is otherwise mostly good but wanting lots of cleaning, with lots of patina and light rust, with the light rust most obvious on the hardware such as the frog screws and lateral levers.
Plane on the left -- The front knob has one check at the base, and a variety of scratches and dings in the wood. The rear handle is unbroken, but shows wear to the finish, has some tiny chips at the top, and a variety of scratches and dings in the wood. The sole has some areas of light pitting. The iron and chip breaker have areas of patina and light rust, and the lower edge of the chip breaker has been ground down on the lower edge and is discolored along part of that lower edge. The iron is bowed slightly. The lever cap is chipped along the lower edge as noted, and the lower edge may have been ground down.
Plane in the middle --The front knob has several small checks at the base, and lots of scratches and dings in the wood. The rear handle is unbroken, but shows wear to the finish, has some chips at the top, and a variety of scratches and dings in the wood. The rear handle is thinner than most, and both pieces of wood have spots of paint to clean off. The sole has quite a bit of modest pitting. The iron and chip breaker have areas of patina and light rust, and the lower edge of the chip breaker has been bent slightly to increase the pressure on the iron as is often done. The lever cap has been ground down on the lower edge.
Plane on the right --The front knob has split and been reglued in several places near the base, and it has a variety of scratches and dings in the wood, and some paint spots to clean off. The rear handle is unbroken, with some chips in the finish coating, some chips at the top, some more paint to clean off, but fewer scratches and dings in the wood compared to the other two. The sole has some areas of light pitting, and the throat has been opened up as noted. The iron and chip breaker have some areas of patina and light rust, but are cleaner than the other two. The lower edge of the chip breaker has been ground down on the lower edge and is discolored along the full width of that lower edge. The lever cap has lost some of its nickeling, but appears to be intact along the lower edge.
Except as noted, there are no cracks or chips or chunks missing from any of the castings, and everything turns or operates properly.
The winner gets all three planes!
SHIPPING: 9 pounds when boxed, shipped US Postal Service Ground Advantage, insurance and tracking and delivery confirmation signature are included. No International shipping.
l sell what I enjoy, and I collect antique woodworking tools andI enjoy photography! The queue is overflowing with tools right now, as they seem to be finding me faster than I can list them. So please keep watching as I have LOTS more to list!
ETHICS IN DESCRIPTIONS: I also buy for my collecting on , and I have been burned too many times by misleading (duh did I forget to mention .......) descriptions, and sales with pictures only of the left side because the right side was trashed. Life is much simpler for me if I disclose what I know or see about an item before you offer, and especially before you receive it in the mail. I come from the handshake school of doing business, and hopefully you are like me and understand what that means. What goes around, comes around.
RETURN POLICY: I believe that if you give honest descriptions, and include enough pictures, you shouldn't need a return policy. However, that doesn't mean that I won't make an occasional mistake. Please offer with the assurance that if I have made an error in my listing, I WILL take care of you.
SHIPPING: I use the US Post Office for everything. If the value is $250 or over, I will always require a delivery confirmation signature, which requires for the buyer and seller protections to be in effect.
INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING: I no longer ship Internationally other than Canada. If you are in Canada, ask for what the shipping would cost, but be prepared for it to be $$$$$.
NEWSLETTER:Every Friday sends out an email with my newsletter featuring 10 of my most interesting new listings. To subscribe, click on the heart symbol that is labeled SAVE SELLER, and that will automatically get you on the mailing list for the newsletters. They are free, and you can unsubscribe at any time.
SELLING OUTSIDE OF : Why would I risk my lengthy good standing with to save you a couple of dollars? Especially when you ask on an email that is sent through the email system which they are reading? Please don't ask, the answer is no.
sales: I won’t end an sale listing early to sell it to you directly. As a buyer, I really dislike going back at the end of an sale to offer, only to discover that the seller had ended the sale early. So I won’t do that for you, or to you.
PACKAGING: Please check my response -- I package well. I understand how disappointing it is to receive a purchase where the seller clearly didn't care about how it was packaged. I work to package everything with lots of protection for it, and I always use a new box or new envelope.
OFFERS: I will always consider an offer, some longer than others. Your best chance of success happens if the item has been listed for a while, your offer is reasonable (to me!), and you are a regular customer.
I am a long-time active member of the PNTC or Pacific Northwest Tool Collectors, and a long distance member of the MWTCA or Mid-West Tool Collectors Association. And once in a while I might turn up at a PAST meeting!
I hope someday I will meet some of you as we trudge the happy road of tool collecting!
