For your consideration an original, authentic 1869 ALS (autographed letter signed) on original Forty-First Congress U.S. House of Representatives stationery.
The letter dated December 8, 1869 is correspondence from Samuel S. "Sunset" Cox, a prominent 19th-century Democratic statesman who represented both Ohio and New York in the House and Daniel W. Voorhees ("The Tall Sycamore of the Wabash") a highly influential Senator and Representative from Indiana.
The recipient of the letter is Governor John T. Hoffman, a central Tammany Hall figure heavily backed by "Boss" Tweed. The letter is highly endorsing Joseph E. Jones for the position of Harbor Master of New York.
Ink is somewhat faded due to advanced age of 157 years, with minimal toning, no major splits on the fold lines and no tape repairs.
A must for collectors of congressional history and the Civil War/Reconstruction collecting market.
