Saint Martin de Porres
Saint Martin de Porres (1579–1639) was a Dominican lay brother in Lima, Peru, known for his profound humility, his dedication to the poor and sick, and his miraculous gifts. As the son of a Spanish nobleman a freed black woman from Panama, he occupied a marginalized position in colonial society, yet he became a pillar of the Church, establishing orphanages and hospitals for the diverse populations of the city. He is a testament to the fact that holiness thrives in the service of one’s own community, regardless of the societal status or racial prejudice one faces.
