xxiii (23) + 111 pages. RUBRICATED & BLUE CAPITALS, ILLUSTRATED WITH SIGILS. Large octavo (9 1/2 by 6 1/2 inch) hardcover, full light green cloth, paper label to spine.
Lacking d/j, some sunfading to cloth, some light chipping to the spine label, one stray thread that doesn\'t appear to be integral (SEE PIC); but overall joints & hinges very firm, interior pristine, and VERY GOOD CONDITION.
Though attributed to the 13th century Pope Honorius, this grimoire was probably written in the 17th century. It was standard practice in many cases to attribute works to famous people of the past in order to give them more weight in people\'s eyes. According to A. E. Waite, the name of this Pope was used because \"it pretends to convey the express sanction of the Apostolical Seat for the operations of Infernal Magic and Necromancy\". Honorius was also friends with the mathematician and astrologer and reputed sorcerer Michael Scot, and this may have helped contribute to the attribution of his authorship.
The publisher Daniel Driscoll lovingly produced all of these books with red, blue and black inks and often elaborately decorated title pages and elaborate initial letters on fine paper. He actually used an old letterpress with moveable lead type which must have differed very little from those used through the 16th to the 18th centuries. This meant that when the plates were broken up, no more could be printed, and all of the books were as a result limited editions. Driscoll and Heptangle represented an amazing episode in late 20th-century occult printing, and these beautiful books – the few he managed to produce with these elaborate methods – remain as a fantastic legacy for lovers of the book arts and the occult.
Heptangle did a second, or reprint edition of this book in 1983, but it was not reset in type: it was \"printed lithographically from the sheets of the first edition\". As a result this actual, incredibly elaborate first edition, with its severe limitation to 450 copies, is now highly coveted.
