The mid century Italian designers were on a roll in the postwar period.
New makers were appearing and fashioning things that were wild and unthinkable
just a few years earlier. PALLADIO was a firm which specialized in working metal
and creating fabulous sconces. Many of their designs were one of a kind.
Handcrafted with a sense of whimsy any Disney Imagineer would envy, this lamp
captures the romance of King Arthur's day!
A Castle Key with three shields! Bravery! Truth! Nobility!
In King Arthur's castle the Round Table Hall where the King and his knights
would meet had a wall where each knight's shield would be hung up.
This "shield wall" showed which knights were currently in attendance and
available for noble quests!
This lamp evokes this memory and places three shields upon
an ornate gilded castle key. The shields are each crowned and emerging
from the crowns is a lamp socket to provide glorious illumination
to the castle!
Each socket has a switch behind the shield which turns a bulb off or on.
This Palladio lamp was a special order and has the Palladio imprint
stamped into the metal as well as the remnant of the custom Palladio label!
Safe to say, this wall sconce is not a common sight in even the most
palatial residences all over the world! Quite the opposite this sconce
is for the castle owner who wants complete exclusivity!
Palladio had very low production figures and their target customers
were on the highest portion of the income spectrum - who expected
nothing less than remarkable lighting fixtures.
The Palladio craftsmen outdid themselves in the way they aged and
hand worked the metal and enamel - the piece has the look of great antiquity
as well as the look of ancient forging and decorations. The details
illustrate the exact opposite of mass production! A truly incredible sconce
for equally incredible living spaces!
