שאלות ותשובות צפנת פענח לגאון הרוגצ\'ובי - מהדורה ראשונה דווינסק ת\"ש | 1940 נדבת בתו שהוציאה את הספר לאור

This is the first edition of the Responsa (Shu\"t) Tzofnat Paneach, authored by the legendary \"Rogatchover Gaon,\" Rabbi Yosef Rozin. Printed in Dvinsk in 1940 (ת\"ש), this work was published posthumously through the heroic efforts of the author\'s daughter, Rachel Citron.

This edition is a poignant historical artifact of the highest order. After her father passed away in 1936, Rachel Citron left the safety of Petach Tikva, Israel, to return to Dvinsk, Latvia. Her sole mission was to assemble her father\'s unpublished manuscripts and make them available to future generations. Working alongside Rabbi Yisroel Alter Safern-Fuchs (the Rogatchover’s successor), she published two volumes before the Nazi onslaught halted European production.

In her moving introduction, Rachel Citron noted that all profits from the sale were dedicated to funding the publication of the remainder of her father\'s work. Her hope was to continue this sacred task outside of Israel, a mission made desperate by the encroaching Holocaust.

✨ The Rescue Mission

When the Rogatchover Gaon passed away in 1936, His daughter Rachel Citron left the safety of her home in Petach Tikva, Israel, to return to Dvinsk, Latvia, for the purpose of assembling the Rogatchover’s many unpublished manuscripts and make them available to future generations of Talmud students. She worked with Rabbi Yisroel Alter Safern-Fuchs (her father’s devoted student and successor). They published two volumes before the Nazi onslaught prevented further publication in Europe.

As total destruction approached from 1940–1941, Rachel Citron and Rabbi Safern-Fuchs worked feverishly to save the Gaon\'s legacy:

  • Microfilm Preservation: They hurriedly photographed thousands of pages of the Rogatchover’s Talmud and Rambam, which were covered in his unique marginal notes.

  • The New York Connection: They mailed these microfilms and correspondence files weekly in manila envelopes to R. Zvi Hirsch Safern in New York.

  • Final Plea: In their letters, they begged the New York relatives to deliver these materials to rabbinic authorities for publication.

Shortly after the final envelope was sent, both Rachel Citron and Rabbi Safern-Fuchs were deported and murdered by the Nazis on June 3, 1942. This 1940 Dvinsk edition stands as the final fruit of their five-year labor to preserve the Rogatchover\'s genius.
