On black-bordered paper, Congressman Hooper conveys to Senator George Edmunds, Mrs. Edwin Stanton\'s request that he serve as a pallbearer for the former Secretary of War and recent Supreme Court nominee
Autograph Letter signed: "S. Hooper" in black ink, 1p, 5x8. Washington [D.C.], 1869 December 24. On the day of the death of Edwin M. Stanton, Lincoln and Johnson\'s Secretary of War, the Massachusetts congressman writes to Vermont Senator George F. Edmunds. In full: "Mrs. Stanton request (sic) that you will act as one of the Pall Bearers at the funeral of the Honorable Edwin M. Stanton. The Services will take place at his late residence, 320 K Street, on Monday the 27th Inst. At Twelve o\'clock." Just four days earlier, Stanton\'s nomination by President Grant as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court had been confirmed by the U.S. Senate. Although Stanton was never sworn in, history records that Stanton was appointed Associate Justice of the Supreme Court on December 20, 1869. Lincoln had elevated Stanton, a former Democrat, to Secretary of War in 1862, and the irascible Stanton proved an tireless organizer of eventual victory. It was Johnson\'s attempt to remove Stanton from office, in contravention of the Tenure of Office Act, which triggered Johnson\'s impeachment. SAMUEL HOOPER (1808-1875) was a Republican congressman from Massachusetts from 1861 until his death in 1875. The success of the April 1861 national loan for financing the war was, according to then-Secretary of the Treasury Salmon P. Chase, due to the "good judgment, persevering exertions, and disinterested patriotism of Mr. Hooper." What makes Chase\'s tribute to Hooper remarkable is that the Congressman, later Chairman of the powerful Ways and Means Committee, was a very junior, first-term Congressman when he successfully championed the war finance bill. Mounting remnants at top verso (with light show-through) and remnants at bottom verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
