Description & History

Robeson Cutlery Company was established in the late 19th century in Camillus, New York, and became one of the better-known American makers of traditional pocket knives. The firm produced a broad catalog of slipjoint patterns for everyday carry, farming, and outdoor use. Like many period cutlers, Robeson offered multiple blade steels and handle materials ranging from celluloid and bone to genuine stag and pearl. The company operated through the early-to-mid 20th century before closing, though the Robeson name and some patterns continued in limited later production.

ShurEdge was one of the brand lines used on Robeson blades during later production. The etch “Robeson ShurEdge U.S.A.” appears on many of these knives and became a recognizable mark for collectors of the brand. Pocket Eze was a specific two-blade pattern name applied to certain models in the Robeson line. These knives typically featured a larger primary blade paired with a smaller secondary blade, nickel silver or brass bolsters, and an oval shield on the handle scales.

During its peak years Robeson competed with other New York and Pennsylvania cutlers by emphasizing solid construction, reliable springs, and a wide selection of patterns at accessible prices. The company maintained its own manufacturing in Camillus and produced both standard catalog knives and special-order pieces for hardware distributors and retailers. Handle materials such as genuine stag were reserved for higher-grade examples and remain popular with collectors today because of the natural variation in color and figure. Nickel silver bolsters and brass pins were standard on many patterns and provided both durability and the traditional appearance expected of American slipjoints of the period.

Factory seconds were a normal part of production for nearly every American cutlery company. Knives marked “2nd” typically had minor cosmetic issues—slight misalignment, small polishing variations, or other non-functional imperfections—that prevented them from being sold as first-quality goods. These pieces were still fully usable and were often sold at reduced prices through jobbers and discount channels. Collectors now seek unused factory seconds because they preserve the original etch, fit, and handle material of a given pattern while documenting the grading practices of the era. Finding one still sealed in its original plastic bag with a retailer label adds further context to how the knife was distributed after leaving the factory.

This example is a factory second from later Robeson production. It carries the classic Pocket Eze oval shield, genuine stag scales with natural figure, nickel silver bolsters, and brass pins. Both blades are etched Robeson ShurEdge U.S.A., and one blade is clearly stamped “2nd.” The knife remains in its original plastic bag, which bears a Robeson Stag FL barcode label consistent with new old stock sold through retailers. Factory seconds were common across the industry and often represent knives with minor cosmetic variances that did not meet first-quality standards but were still fully functional.

Robeson knives from this period are collected for their solid traditional construction, recognizable etches, and the range of handle materials offered. Unused examples still in original packaging or bags are less common than used pieces and appeal to collectors who prefer condition. The combination of the ShurEdge etch, Pocket Eze pattern, and stag handles places this knife within the later traditional American slipjoint production that followed the peak years of Robeson manufacturing.

Robeson ShurEdge Pocket Eze stag two-blade. Factory second, unused, in original bag. About 3 3/8–3 1/2 in. closed. Made in the U.S.A.
