Robert Hébras (1925–2023) was the last surviving witness ofthe Oradour-sur-Glane massacre, a Nazi atrocity committed on June 10, 1944,during World War II. Born in the village, the 19-year-old Hébras survived whensoldiers from the 2nd SS Panzer Division \"Das Reich\" murdered 643 ofhis neighbors, including his mother and two sisters, by shooting men in barnsand burning women and children in a church.
After narrowly escaping the carnage whileshielded by the bodies of other victims, Hébras devoted his life to preservingthe memory of the victims and seeking justice.He testified in the 1953 trial of 21 Waffen-SS soldiers and later in the1983 trial of Heinz Barth, though many perpetrators were eventually amnestiedor escaped prosecution.
