The 1846 incident that triggered the Mexican-American War wastheThornton Affair(or Thornton Skirmish) on April 25, where Mexican troops ambushed U.S. Dragoons led by Captain Seth Thornton in the disputed territory along the Rio Grande, resulting in 11 U.S. soldiers killed and others captured, which President Polk used to declare war, claiming Mexico had shed American blood on American soil.
