Rare c1905 Antique Postcard Copper Mine Copperas Hill South Stafford Vermont

Copperas Hill is a peak in Vermont and has an elevation of 1,804 feet. Copperas Hill is situated nearby to the hamlet Cuttingsville and the town Shrewsbury.

The Copperas Hill Mine is near Shrewsbury, Vermont. Historically the site has been associated with the Wallingford Area which is now part of the Green Mountain National Forest. Mine operations consist of surface workings extending 3.51 acres. There is only one known shaft. The ore mined is composed of copper, silver, chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite with waste material consisting primarily of arsenopyrite, quartz, and pyrite.

When the prosperity of the late 1820s and more efficient production of Copperas coincided, the proprietors of the Vermont Mineral Factory Company, which owned the ample deposits on Copperas Hill, decided to try to separate and smelt the copper on site. In 1830, land and water rights were bought and construction was begun on a copper smelting plant. Smelting may have started that same year, and was definitely in full swing by 1831.

The operators of the mine had been aware of the presence of copper in the ground as early as 1820, if not before.

Please inspect the pictures, as they give the best representation of condition. May have discoloring, edge or corner wear, marks, creases, fading, smudges, corner or edge bends, tears, or corners missing.

For example, there is a tear along the top layer on the front top section of the postcard, and there is some staining on the back.
