Karl von Einem was a major figure in Imperial German military history, serving as Prussian Minister of War from 1903–1909 and later as a senior German commander during World War I. He commanded the German Third Army from 1914 through the end of the war, including during major fighting on the Western Front.
This photograph is particularly noteworthy because it appears to show von Einem accompanied by his wife Marie von Rothmaler, daughter of Prussian General of Infantry Louis von Rothmaler. Period genealogical sources confirm Karl von Einem’s marriage to Marie von Rothmaler.
Images of Marie von Einem appear to be exceptionally scarce. We have been unable to readily locate another clearly identified period photograph of her, making this potentially a very rare photographic record of the couple. We cannot definitively claim it is the only known photograph, but it may represent an extremely uncommon or possibly previously undocumented image of Marie von Einem.
Karl von Einem is shown in full Imperial German military uniform wearing a Pickelhaube and an impressive group of decorations and medals, with additional decorations visible below the medal bar. He carries gloves and what appears to be a walking stick or cane. The excellent full-length composition provides strong detail of his uniform, decorations, and distinctive Imperial-era spiked helmet.
The reverse bears the photographer’s stamp:

The postcard has attractive period deckle/scalloped edges and appears unused. There is a small handwritten collector notation on the reverse. Please examine all photographs carefully for exact condition.
