Rare Balinese Barong Bangkal Boar Mask Articulated Jaw Ceremonial Folk Art ~ 14\" For Sale

Barong Bangkal appears in Balinese dance and ceremonial processions associated with protection, prosperity and good fortune. This dramatic mask was designed to be worn or carried and features a hinged lower jaw that moves up and down, extended wooden handles, oversized ears, carved tusks and applied natural hair.

The mask is hand-painted black with gold dots and accented in red, white and gold around the eyes and mouth. It was likely carved in the Ubud area from lightweight pule wood, a material traditionally favored by Balinese mask makers. The exact maker, age and ceremonial history are unknown.

Each hand-carved Balinese mask has its own distinctive expression, making this an outstanding display piece for a collection of Balinese art, theatrical masks, Southeast Asian folk art or ethnographic décor.

Very good vintage condition with age-related scratches, surface wear, paint loss and wear to the applied hair, cords and interior. These natural signs of age add character and authenticity to the piece.

The lower jaw is hinged and articulates. Display wire has been attached for immediate hanging and can easily be removed if desired.
