I purchased this amazing hand-painted Hanuman mask in Bali in the 90’s from world-renowned mask maker Ida Bagus Sutarja when he was still alive.
Ida Bagus is one of the preeminent mask carvers in Bali. He comes from a family of master mask carvers and is part of the famous Mas Village tradition, the historic center of Balinese mask carving. His work is found in International museums, major private collections and famous art galleries.
Unlike commercial carving, Ida Bagus Sutarja selects wood carefully (often pule or other sacred woods), observes ritual purity during carving and creates masks that are ritually consecrated, not just displayed
