This is a hand-painted animation production cel (measures 14”x15”) featuring crossover characters with this being from “Hägar the Horrible” and “Blondie”’s Dagwood Bumstead. These two comic strip icons were brought together in an animated crossover series called:
“The Fantastic Funnies” (1980)
Here’s the background:
• “The Fantastic Funnies” was a CBS television special that aired in 1980, designed to celebrate the legacy of newspaper comic strips.
• It featured animated segments of beloved comic characters including Hägar the Horrible, Dagwood & Blondie, Dick Tracy, Nancy, and more.
• This cel likely comes from a scene in that special, where characters from different strips interact in animated form — a rare crossover event.
Why it’s collectible:
• Hand-painted cels like this were used in actual animation production — each one is unique.
• Featuring two major comic characters from different franchises makes it even more unusual and desirable.
• Many cels from this era were either discarded or stuck in studio archives, so framed and preserved versions are great finds.
