This unusual handmade ballpoint pen bears hand-engraved markings “1971–1973” together with “K-510.” These personalized markings are particularly interesting and appear to record the period associated with its original owner and a correctional/institutional designation.
Unlike factory-made Soviet writing instruments, prison-art objects were individually handcrafted from whatever materials were available, making every surviving example unique. Comparable Soviet prison-made pens from the period are collected today as examples of USSR folk art, inmate craftsmanship and social history.
The substantial dark body appears to be made from a hard vintage resin/plastic, possibly a phenolic or Bakelite-type material, with metal writing components. The exact material has not been laboratory tested, so it is not represented as confirmed Bakelite.
The pen has a distinctive handmade surface and construction. It can be disassembled, and its old internal refill remains inside.
