1862 CIVIL WAR BOOK Maine Adjutant General 1861 Annual Report Roster Provenance
Item Description
Up for sale is an authentic, first-edition piece of American Civil War history: The 1861 Annual Report of the Adjutant General of the State of Maine.
Published in Augusta, Maine, in 1862 by Stevens and Sayward, Printers to the State, this massive volume documents the earliest, most critical months of the state's massive military mobilization following the outbreak of the American Civil War.
HISTORICAL PROVENANCE:
This volume features a specialized period binding with the name "E. W. FRENCH" stamped in gold leaf at the base of the spine. Historical research strongly attributes this copy to Ephraim W. French of Eastport, Maine. Serving as a senior civic and fraternal figure in Eastport during the war, French lived in a high-stakes, heavily fortified border town near British-controlled Canada—making this personal record of Maine’s troop tracking a deeply relevant piece of regional history.
WHAT IS INSIDE:
• Crucial regimental data for the 1st through 15th Maine Infantry Volunteers, Cavalry, and Artillery units during their 1861 organization.
• Contains the highly sought-after Appendix "D" consisting of exhaustive historical rosters detailing individual soldiers' names, hometowns, companies, and enlistment dates.
• Full text of general state military orders, weaponry reports, and supply logistics.
CONDITION REPORT (Please Read and Review Photos Carefully):
• BINDING: Bound in original period full/three-quarter tan sheepskin leather. The boards remain physically attached to the text block.
• EXTERIOR WEAR: The leather surfaces show advanced aging and the typical matte, powdery texture indicative of historical "Red Rot." Flaking is present along the edges and spine. It should be handled with care.
• INTERIOR PAPER: The text block is robust, square, and secure. There is heavy, prominent water/tide-staining that affects the first several leaves, including the main title page (as clearly pictured). The internal roster pages and remaining text are quite fully legible, and do show some staining or foxing . Please see all pictures for condition and enjoy!!!!
