Clark [1927 – 2021] was an American lawyer, activist, andfederal governmentofficial. A progressive,New Frontierliberal, he occupied senior positions in theUnited States Department of Justiceunder PresidentsJohn F. KennedyandLyndon B. Johnson, serving asUnited States Attorney Generalfrom 1967 to 1969; previously, he wasDeputy Attorney Generalfrom 1965 to 1967 andAssistant Attorney Generalfrom 1961 to 1965.
As attorney general, Clark was known for his vigorous opposition to thedeath penalty, aggressive support ofcivil libertiesandcivil rights, and dedication to enforcingUnited States antitrust laws. Clark supervised the drafting of theVoting Rights Act of 1965andCivil Rights Act of 1968.
After leaving public office, Clark led many progressive activism campaigns, including opposition to thewar on terror. He offered advice or legal defense to such prominent figures asCharles Taylor,Slobodan Milošević,Saddam Hussein, ColonelMuammar Gaddafi, andLyndon LaRouche. He was the last surviving Cabinet member of theLyndon B. Johnson administration.
Clark attendedWoodrow Wilson High Schoolin Washington, D.C., but dropped out at the age of 17 in order to join theUnited States Marine Corps, seeing action in Western Europe in the final months of World War II;he served until 1946.
