France, 1917 written in sweatbandJohn Kennard Conant was born September 6, 1896 in Montclair, New Jersey. Following High School, Conant attended Cornell University. He joined the American Ambulance Field Service on April 14, 1917. He served as a driver in France until his date of departure on October 15, 1917 and was awarded the Croix de Guerre Medal. Conant died on July 21, 1966 in Delaware. He is buried at Riverview Cemetery in Wilmington, Delaware.The American Field Service (AFS) (1914-1917) of nearly 2,500 operated ambulances in direct support of French combat divisions, transporting the wounded from the front lines to field hospitals. They were amongst the first American citizens to serve in the First World War. Mostly comprised of college aged men. Rarely encountered, especially with its matching documents!The Cap is in very good overall condition for its age and period use. This is an excellent little grouping to add to an advanced US militaria collection.
