This is an exceptionally rare piece of modern American presidential history from the 60th Presidential Inauguration of Donald J. Trump on January 20, 2025.
These official programs were prepared for what was originally planned as a massive outdoor inauguration at the U.S. Capitol. More than 250,000 guests were expected to attend the ticketed ceremony on the Capitol grounds. However, only days before the inauguration, dangerously cold temperatures forced the ceremony indoors to the U.S. Capitol Rotunda, marking the first time in 40 years that a presidential swearing-in had been moved indoors.
The last-minute change dramatically reduced attendance, with the Rotunda accommodating only a small fraction of those originally expected. The outdoor ticketed areas were closed, leaving enormous quantities of inaugural materials prepared for attendees no longer able to participate in the ceremony as planned.
As a result, many programs were never distributed. Thousands were reportedly returned following the cancellation of the outdoor events, with large quantities ultimately destroyed rather than released to the public. Surviving examples therefore represent a fascinating artifact of an inauguration that changed course at the eleventh hour.
Unlike a mass-produced commemorative souvenir created after the fact, this is an official piece produced for the actual inaugural ceremonies. Its connection to the unprecedented venue change, greatly reduced attendance, and subsequent disposition of unused programs makes it an especially impressive and difficult-to-find artifact from the beginning of Donald J. Trump\'s second presidency.
