JamesAvery Hopwood(May 28, 1882–July 1, 1928) was an American playwright of theJazz Age. He had four plays running simultaneously onBroadwayin 1920. Hopwood was born to James and JulePendergast Hopwood on May 28, 1882, inCleveland, Ohio. He graduated from Cleveland'sWest High Schoolin1900.In 1901, he began attending theUniversity of MichiganinAnn Arbor. However, his family experienced financialdifficulties, so for his second year he transferred toAdelbert College. He returned to the University of Michigan inthe fall of 1903, and graduatedPhi Beta Kappain 1905. Hopwood started out as ajournalist for theCleveland Leaderas its New Yorkcorrespondent, but within a year had his first play,Clothes(1906),produced on Broadway, with the aid of playwright Channing Pollock. Hopwoodeventually became known as "The Playboy Playwright"[4]and specialized in comedies and farces, some ofthem with material considered risqué at the time. One play,The Demi-Virginin 1921, prompted a court casebecause of its suggestive subject matter, including a risque game of cards,"Stripping Cupid", where a bevy of showgirls teased the audience intheir lingerie. The case was dismissed. His many plays includedNobody'sWidow(1910), starringBlanche Bates;Fair and Warmer(1915), starringMadge Kennedy(filmed in 1919);The Gold Diggers(1919),starringIna Clairein New York andTallulah Bankheadin London; (filmed in 1923 asThe Gold Diggers,in 1928 asGold Diggers of Broadwayandalso asGold Diggers of 1933);Ladies' Night, 1920,starringCharlie Ruggles(filmedin 1928); the famous mystery playThe Bat(withMary Roberts Rinehart),1920 (filmed in 1926 asThe Bat, in 1930asThe Bat Whispers,andin 1959 asThe Bat);Getting Gertie's Garter(withWilson Collison), 1921, starringHazel Dawn(filmed in 1927 and 1945);The Demi-Virgin, 1921, also starring Dawn;TheAlarm Clock, 1923;The Best People(with David Gray), 1924(filmed in1925and asFast and Loosein1930 withClara Bow); the song-farceNaughtyCinderella, 1925, starringIrene BordoniandThe Garden of Edenin1927, withTallulah BankheadinLondon andMiriam Hopkinsin NewYork; (filmed in 1928 asThe Garden of Eden).Hopwood was asked to write the third act of Mary Roberts Rinehart's mysteryplayThe Bat.[5]He then collaborated with Rinehart on reworkingthe entire play at her home in Sewickley and sometimes in New York. The Batscored897 performances at the Morosco theater, NYC. The early sound filmTheBat Whispersplayed an influence on Bob Kane'sBatmanbecause the inspiration for Batman's costume camefrom the "mysterious Bat" character portrayed in the movie from 1930.In 1906, Hopwood was introduced to writer and photographerCarl Van Vechten. The two became close friends and weresometimes sexual partners.In the 1920s Hopwood had a tumultuous andabusive romantic relationship with fellow Cleveland-born playwright John Floyd.Although Hopwood announced to the press in 1924 that he was engaged tovaudeville dancer and choreographerRosa Rolanda, Van Vechten confirmed in later years that it wasa publicity stunt. Rolanda would later marry caricaturistMiguel Covarrubias. On theevening of July 1, 1928, atJuan-les-Pinson the French Riviera, Hopwood suffered afatal heart attack while swimming. He was buried in Riverside Cemetery,Cleveland.His mother, Jule Hopwood, inherited a large trust from him, buthe had not made arrangements for the disposition of other items, includingliterary rights. While she was working through the legal issues with hisestate, Jule Hopwood fell ill and died on March 1, 1929. She was buried next toher son.[
